Musical Theatre

Our music theatre production class will begin on Monday, October 17, and we couldn’t be more excited to get rolling on Chicago: Teen Edition. It is exciting to think that over 70 students will be performing and working together to create a successful show. Chicago The Musical has been around for many years. In short, it show takes place in the Roaring Twenties and stars Roxie Hart, who murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband, Amos, to take the rap...until he finds out he's been duped and turns on Roxie. Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another "Merry Murderess", Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the "American Dream": fame, fortune, and acquittal. We hope you’re as excited as we are for HSS’s production in the spring of 2023. Musical Theatre runs after school on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 - 5:30 pm starting on Monday, October 17.

Music

Our jazz ensemble has begun rehearsing on Tuesdays at 7:30 am and Thursdays at 3:30 pm once again and we couldn’t be more thrilled to be back rehearsing. Students are having a great time working on new tunes and meeting all the new members. The two sections of concert band have been busy refreshing their musical skills in class. Stay tuned for news regarding our first concert and our annual holiday plant fundraiser. Details will be sent out by email to families soon.

Dance

The dance and drama classes have had an exciting start to the school year. In dance, we started by exploring GAGA movement created by Ohad Naharin. We learned about the Batsheva dance company and have been inspired by the choreography of Naharin. We have started our own GAGA-inspired dance that you will be able to see on the class website in about a month. The dance class has also been visiting the local dance studios: Squamish Dance Centre, Howe Sound Dance Academy, and Dance Directions. You can check out photos and videos from these adventures on the class website.

Drama

The drama class has been working on theatre history. We have six different groups working on six different historical eras for theatre. They will be sharing important events from history along with an excerpt from a relevant play. Drama students are also going on a field trip to see a performance in Vancouver at The Stanley Theatre, Peter Pan Goes Wrong. We will be sharing photos and videos from the field trip on the class website shortly.
